State and territory record retention: seven different frameworks
Commonwealth-ready is not state-ready. Different Acts, different rules.
State and territory agencies operate under their own records management frameworks, not the Archives Act 1983. NSW: State Records Act 1998. Victoria: Public Records Act 1973. Queensland: Public Records Act 2002. South Australia: State Records Act 1997. Western Australia: State Records Act 2000. Tasmania: Archives Act 1983 (Tas). ACT: Territory Records Act 2002. NT: Information Act 2002.
Each jurisdiction has its own records disposal authorities and minimum retention periods. The broad principles mirror the Commonwealth framework, but specifics differ. State HR teams deploying interview technology cannot assume a Commonwealth-compliant system automatically meets state obligations.
