Where the 16 weeks actually go in APS recruitment
Not bureaucracy. Administrative overhead. Here’s the breakdown.
A standard APS recruitment round takes 10 to 16 weeks. Breaking it down by stage: advertising 2-3 weeks, shortlisting 1-3 weeks, interview scheduling 1-2 weeks, interview conduct 1-3 weeks, scribe notes processing 3-7 days, panel deliberation and report 1-2 weeks, probity and references 1-2 weeks, offers and notification 3-7 days.
Some stages have irreducible minimums set by APS requirements. Others are driven by avoidable administrative overhead, manual scheduling coordination, handwritten note processing, multiple meeting re-scheduling for deliberation. Agencies investing in structured interview management platforms report time-to-hire reductions of three to five weeks, without cutting corners on merit.
Speed matters. Candidates with in-demand skills do not wait sixteen weeks. They accept offers from employers who move faster.
